Total Coliform

Total coliforms are a large group of bacteria found in soil, plants, and animal waste. While most are harmless, their presence in well water indicates that the water is exposed to surface contamination, meaning disease-causing bacteria, viruses, or parasites could also be in your water. Homeowners should test for total coliform annually to ensure their water is safe to drink, as contamination cannot be smelled, seen, or tasted.
Why Test for Total Coliform?
-
Safety Net: It tells you if the "pathway" is open for harmful germs to enter your well.
-
Hidden Danger: It’s the easiest way to detect that something is wrong with your water source.
-
Health Protection: It helps prevent illnesses like stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea.
When to Test (Frequency)
-
Annually: Test at least once every year.
-
After Storms: Test after heavy rains or flooding.
-
After Repairs: Test after repairing your well, pump, or plumbing.
-
Changes in Water: Test immediately if your water suddenly tastes, smells, or looks different.

Tip: Late spring or early summer is often the best time to test.
