Hard water does not pose a health risk but causes practical problems. When heated, calcium and magnesium form white scale deposits inside pipes, water heaters, and appliances. This scale reduces water flow, lowers heating efficiency, and shortens the lifespan of equipment.


How Iron Enters Well Water and Its Effects


Iron is another common mineral found in well water. It usually exists in two forms:


  • Ferrous iron (dissolved iron) is clear in water but oxidizes when exposed to air.

  • Ferric iron (oxidized iron) appears as reddish-brown particles or rust.


Iron enters groundwater through natural erosion of iron-containing rocks and soil. High iron levels can cause:


  • Rust stains on sinks, tubs, laundry, and plumbing fixtures.

  • Metallic taste and discoloration of water.

  • Clogging of pipes and water filters due to iron buildup.


Iron concentrations above 0.3 mg/L can cause noticeable staining and taste issues. Some wells have iron levels exceeding 10 mg/L, which requires treatment.
